What Is Line Shopping and Does It Actually Matter?

Line shopping means checking the same market at multiple sportsbooks and betting wherever the price is best. Consistently getting -105 instead of -110, or an extra half-point on a spread, changes your long-run break-even rate by a percentage point or more — larger than most bettors' handicapping edge.

The math

At -110 you need to win 52.4% of bets to break even. At -105 the break-even rate falls to 51.2%. That 1.2-point difference is available for free simply by holding two accounts.

On spreads, the half-point matters most around the key numbers 3 and 7 in football, where games land far more often than a uniform distribution would suggest.

Where prices differ most

Player props and same-game parlays vary far more between books than main spreads, because they are modelled rather than market-priced.

Niche leagues and mid-major college games also carry wider gaps than headline fixtures.

How many accounts do you need?

Two is the practical minimum and captures most of the benefit. Three gives useful coverage across props and alternate lines.
