What Is Rollover in Sports Betting?

Rollover is the total amount you must wager before bonus funds can be withdrawn. A 5x rollover on a $500 bonus means $2,500 in qualifying bets. Most sportsbooks also require minimum odds, commonly -200 or longer, for a bet to count toward the requirement.

How rollover is calculated

There are two common formulas. Some books apply the multiplier to the bonus only: a 5x rollover on a $500 bonus is $2,500 in bets. Others apply it to deposit plus bonus: deposit $500, receive $500, and a 5x rollover becomes $5,000 in bets.

Always read which base the operator uses. The same headline multiplier can mean double the work depending on the formula.

Minimum odds rules

Nearly every sportsbook sets a minimum price for a bet to count. -200 (1.50 decimal) is the most common threshold. Betting heavy favourites at -400 will not reduce your rollover balance at most books, even though the bet is settled normally.

Some books also exclude cashed-out bets, voided bets, and both sides of a hedged market.

How to judge whether a bonus is worth claiming

Divide the maximum bonus by the total dollars you must wager. A $500 bonus with a 5x rollover on bonus only requires $2,500 in action, which is a 20% ratio — strong. The same bonus with a 15x rollover requires $7,500, roughly 6.7% — weak.

Then factor in the hold. If you bet -110 lines, the house edge over $7,500 of action is meaningful, and a high-rollover bonus can be negative expected value even if you never lose a bet outright.

Common rollover mistakes

Requesting a withdrawal before rollover clears usually forfeits the bonus and any winnings derived from it. Check your bonus balance in the cashier before cashing out.

Mixing sportsbook and casino play can also break rollover terms, because casino wagers often count at a different rate — or not at all.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a lower rollover always better?

Generally yes, but only when the bonus size is comparable. A small bonus with 1x rollover can be worth less in absolute dollars than a large bonus with 5x.

Do losing bets count toward rollover?

Yes. Rollover measures the amount wagered, not the amount won, so a settled losing bet at qualifying odds still counts.

What happens if I withdraw before clearing rollover?

Most sportsbooks remove the bonus and any winnings attributable to it, returning only your cleared cash balance.
