How Odds Work (The 5-Minute Version)

American sportsbooks show odds like -110 or +150. The negative number is what you risk to win $100. The positive number is what you win on a $100 bet. So -110 means bet $110 to win $100; +150 means bet $100 to win $150.

The Three Bets Beginners Should Know

Moneyline — pick who wins.
Spread — pick who wins after a point handicap.
Total (Over/Under) — pick whether combined score is over or under.

Moneyline: A bet on which team will win the game outright — no point spread.
Point spread: The handicap the favorite must cover for a spread bet to win.
Total (Over/Under): A bet on whether combined points scored are over or under a set number.
Parlay: Multiple bets combined; all must win. Higher payout, much lower win probability.
Prop bet: A bet on a specific event (player points, first score, etc.) not tied to game outcome.
Vig / Juice: The sportsbook's cut, baked into the odds — usually around 4.5% at -110 pricing.
Live betting: Placing bets while a game is in progress; odds update in real time.
Bankroll: The total amount of money you've set aside for betting. Never mix with rent money.
